The parish priest of Belman, the late Rev.Fr. Nicholas
Pereira felt inspired to invite the sisters of charity to the attractive
village of Belman for the cause of education, keeping the Christian
and academic formation at heart. It was also the desire of the late
Bishop, Rt.Rev.Dr. Basil Salvadore D'Souza to start a community in
the village of Belman. The sisters began the mission with the aim
of strengthening the faith of the Christian community through education
and socio-pastoral activity.
And as such, the convent was opened on 20th May 1966 with a group
of four sisters. Sr. Christita, HM, Sr. Bartholomea Lewis and Sr.
Olivia D'Souza were integrated on the staff of the already existing
St. Joseph's Higher primary School, Belman. The late Sr. Helen Rego
looked after the household activities. The residence of the sisters
was a small house by the roadside belonging to the parish.
Sr. Serafina Rasquinha, Superior of Holy Rosary Convent, Alangar,
paid her weekly visit to this infant community for animation and direction.
Her suave and gently influence soon spread in the convent and neighbourhood.
Towards the end of the year 1966, Sr. Christita Monteiro was appointed
Superior and the Headmistress. Sisters helped to train the pupils,
to health, vigour and creativity. Silently, the Lord of the harvest
was working and the seed of charity was sown in young hearts.
The living quarters for the sisters were constructed in 1969. The
blessing and inauguration was done by the Bishop of Mangalore. As
the community grew, more sisters were involved in the teaching apostolate.
Besides teaching, sisters take active part in various parochial activities;
one important among them is to serve the sub-station at Mukamar, about
five miles away from Belman. The sisters were going there every Sunday
and help in preparing for Sunday mass. The sisters were also leading
various associations of the parish. But, the most important work of
the sisters was in the school, of giving proper formation to the boys
and girls.
Sr. Lilia Pinto came as Superior in 1978 while Sr. Maura Mascarenhas
became the Headmistress of the middle school. The community sisters
also increased in number to meet the demands of the apostolate. The
superior gave every co-operation to carryout the activities of the
parish for the promotion of catholic life.
It was under the able guidance of Sr. Ambrosia Rodrigues who was appointed
Superior in November 1984, the community of Belman forged ahead with
zeal and love for the poor.
Sr. Valentine Menezes succeeded Sr. Ambrosia Rodrigues as Animator
in June 1990. Under the capacity, the modification of the chapel roof
and ceiling procured a conducive environment for prayer. The number
of members increased in the community with the arrival of two postulants.
On 8th October 1991, the community celebrated its Silver Years of
existence in this village. The Bishop of Mangalore, concelebrated
the Holy Eucharist along with several other guest priests. A large
number of sisters, parishioners and well wishers participated in this
thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration
In June 1993, Sr. Milena D'Souza took charge as he Animator of the
community. Her kind and human qualities and her faithfulness to prayer
life, created an atmosphere suitable for the growth of every sister
as well as the community as a whole.
In May 1999, Sr. Sylverstrina Lobo came as the Animator of the community.
Under her leadership, the community progressed on the path of charity.
Sisters enthusiastically reached out to the poor and the neglected.
Sr. Gisella Fernandes served as the treasurer of the community till
her last days. On 16th November 1994 she passed away in the Lord at
the age of 84. This sad event in the community made the sisters to
deepen their faith and intensify their prayer life.
In May 1995 Sr. Grace Joseph P. came as the Animator of the community.
Under the initiative the existing chapel of the convent was rearranged
with renovated flooring and changing the position of the Tabernacle,
to make it appropriate for prayer.
The convent was erected in the village of Belman with the aim of strengthening
the faith of the local Christians through education and socio-pastoral
activities. The sisters help in the parish activities too. They animate
various pious associations, teach catechism on Sundays, help the parish
priest in distributing Holy Communion on Sundays and feast days, assist
the children to participate actively in the liturgy and attend the
meeting of the small Christian communities in the families, visiting
the families of the sick, the aged parishioners and the students was
a regular feature of the community. When death occurs in the family,
sisters pay a visit, offer prayers and participate in the funeral
ceremony. The sisters help in the parish by taking care of the church
linen, cleanliness of the alter and sanctuary.
On
27th May 2008 Sr. Grace Joseph handed over the charge of the Animator
to Sr. Gratia D'Souza (Sr. Gracy). With her unassuming ways and qualities
of the heart and mind she has won the love and confidence of the sisters.
She was keen on keeping the community together, organized monthly
recollection days, spiritual conferences, followed by the reception
of the sacrament of reconciliation. The sisters were simple and humble,
yet had farsighted vision of the Animator Sr. Gratia who forged ahead
with an extreme sense of mission and commitment. She had special love
and concern to the poor and the needy. She was sensitive to meet the
needs of all the sisters of the community. Under her leadership in
the parish, the sisters continue the socio pastoral activities as
before.
Sr. Gratia, Superior
Lay Associates' Mission was launched in the community directed by
the Animator on 16th May. The sisters share about our charisma with
the lay associates to pass on the redeeming love of Christ to them
after the example of St. Bartholomea Capitanio. Sr. Donata who had
been attending to various duties at home was transferred to Nirmala
Convent, Ullal during the period. December 13th was a memorable day
for us. We celebrated the 150th years of the arrival of Italian missionary
sisters to India.
Sr. Giampravla who was attending to various duties in the community
was transferred to Heart of Mary Convent, Barkur at this time. The
little seed of charisma of charity sown in Belman in 1966 had fructified
and we thank God for whatever we had been able to achieve for His
people entrusted to our care.
